Minister Frattini declared today, 21 March 2011, that Italy keenly hopes that NATO will as soon as possible take over the command and control of the military operations necessary to enforce United Nations Resolution 1973. NATO is the institution equipped with the proven capacity and experience to handle such operations in a context of full consensus and multilateral coordination.

If the allied countries do not reach agreement to adopt this option, Italy, added Frattini, would consider the idea of setting up its own separate national command. This would manage command and control activities for all military operations to apply Resolution 1973 which envisage the use of the seven bases our country has made available for the mission in question.
