The Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, visited Rome on 7 April 2011. During his visit he met Secretary of State the Hon. Vincenzo Scotti; the Director General for Political and Security Affairs, Ambassador Sandro De Bernardin; officials from the National Authority, based at the Foreign Ministry, and from other government departments involved in implementing the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC); and representatives of Italy’s chemical industry.

During his visit, the Director General also gave a lecture at the Centre for High Defence Studies. He expressed his appreciation and gratitude for Italy’s committed efforts in support of the OPCW, through training courses for international inspectors, assistance in cases of need, and the participation in and organisation of seminars and conferences.

Ambassador Üzümcü’s visit confirms Italy’s long-standing and excellent relations with the OPCW. It provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on the global state of implementation of the Convention and on future related activities. His visit closed with a mutual commitment to continue collaborating to ensure that the Convention is implemented constantly and completely.
