Syria, MFA-DPC agreement to set up a hospital at refugee camp Azrak

Within the context of humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians fleeing the conflict in Syria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Civil Defence (DPC) signed an agreement today at the foreign ministry in Rome on setting up a prefabricated hospital at the Azrak refugee camp in Jordan.

The 1500 sqm facility will be set up by the end of the year by the Autonomous Province of Trent, and will be able to offer healthcare assistance — both emergency and specialised – to the approximately 130,000 Syrian civilians living in the camp. Once completed, the hospital will be donated by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and will be administered by a consortium headed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) in collaboration with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

This initiative falls within the scope of a broader European level project announced on the occasion of the visit by Minister Emma Bonino and EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Kristalina Georgieva to Jordan in June.
