With the situation worsening in Libya, some days ago the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, called for a plan for the defence of Italian nationals in the areas most at risk. Through our embassy and the Crisis Unit, the foreign ministry had already begun monitoring Italians there, and in recent days encouraged the protected transfer of over 100 Italians who had demonstrated their desire to leave the country.
They left Libya in an overland convoy headed for Tunisia and by means of flights arranged by the Crisis Unit, one of which left for Pisa in Italy this morning thanks to the help of the Italian Air Force. Italy has also helped with the transfer of other foreign nationals on the request of several governments.
Our embassy continues to ensure the maximum commitment to protecting the Italian community and interests in Libya.
