The Farnesina Crisis Unit’s unceasing search for Italian nationals involved in Nepal earthquake

The Crisis Unit of the Italian Foreign Ministry continues its active search for all Italian nationals in Nepal, which began immediately following the news of the earthquake, and is in contact with their families. Based on statements by their companions, four Italians have died in the Langtang area, which remains difficult to reach.

An advance team from the Crisis Unit and the Civil Defence Department are on-site in Kathmandu and working in coordination with the Italian embassy in New Delhi, the Consulate General in Calcutta and the Honorary Consul in the capital.

To date, approximately 40 Italian nationals are still unaccounted for, while the information received by the Crisis Unit Operations Room following Saturday’s event have made it possible to trace, in addition to 8 tourists that had registered at the site www.dovesiamonelmondo.it, more than 300 Italians present in the earthquake area who were not registered.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with Interforces Operational Command (COI) to arrange for the first C130 military plane to fly the first Italian nationals out of Kathmandu, as well as another larger plane to will be sent in the next couple of days once it is possible to gather the greatest number of Italian nationals at the airport.
