Libya: Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs on visit in Tripoli

Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola, is in Tripoli today to meet with the Deputy Prime Minister Abdul-Salam Kujman and the Minister of State Mohammad al-Amari – both of whom are members of the Presidential Council – the Foreign Minister Mohammed Siyala, the Minister of the Interior Al-Aref Saleh Khodja, and the Minister of Transport Matough.

The visit by Undersecretary Amendola in Tripoli – the third since the re-establishment there of the Country’s legitimate Institutions at the end of May – will make it possible to concretise new cooperation activities in sectors that are key for Libya’s institutional consolidation process such as security and reactivating the civil aviation system.

The visit, which included representatives of Enav and Enac, was aimed at defining the tangible steps forward to be taken by Enac and its Libyan counterpart in cooperating on the security of airports and aircraft. Moreover, an agreement was signed between the Libyan authorities and Enav concerning the training of Libyan air traffic control personnel. The meeting also highlighted the important contribution that can be made by Italian companies operating in the civil aviation sector.

Undersecretary Amendola also met with the Libyan Interior Minister to discuss migration issues and explore the possible joint initiatives to be taken to fight illegal immigration.

The successful agenda of meetings, the closing of important agreements and the deep appreciation expressed by all the Libyan authorities for Italy’s actions to help combat terrorism – through a makeshift hospital set up in Misrata –confirm the leading role played by Italy in supporting Libyan institutions, emphasise the broad scope of an increasingly diversified and fruitful bilateral partnership and are proof of the trust placed in Libya’s institutional, economic and security consolidation process.
