In response to the European Commissioner for Budget Oettinger, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano said:
“It is better to avoid that Brussels release statements that favour those who want to break with Brussels. Markets have nothing to teach to voters; Italian voters are perfectly capable of voting and Italian democracy has much to teach.
Italians carry in their DNA the marks of a mature democracy. It is in the sign of this democracy that they freely express their vote at the ballot, the outcome of which must be respected, whether it is liked or not. This is true despite all ideologies and political belonging. Respect for freedom comes first and foremost.”
