Visit to the Philippines by Undersecretary Manlio Di Stefano

Tomorrow will be the last day of the visit to the Philippines of the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Manlio Di Stefano, at the head of a business delegation. The Undersecretary had numerous institutional meetings and, among others, met with the Foreign Minister, Teodoro Locsin Jr, the Minister of Finance, Carlos Domínguez III and the Vice President of the Asian Development Bank, Shixin Chen.

In the meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Emmanuel Piñol, the focus was placed on the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperating in the agricultural sector, which is soon expected to be finalised and to establish the regulatory framework to facilitate bilateral cooperation, especially in the field of agricultural mechanisation. The meeting also explored the possible ways for Italian companies to participate in the plan to relaunch the Country’s agriculture and fishing sectors.

In a meeting with the Undersecretary for Defence, Cesar Yano, the theme addressed was the Italy-Philippines Cooperation Agreement in the defence sector, a new version of which is now being negotiated to shift the focus from mere military cooperation to cooperating also in the civil sector. Another theme addressed in the meeting was cooperating in the cyberspace and aerospace sectors.

Undersecretary Di Stefano commented: “In these last few years, the Philippines have promoted enormous changes both in their domestic policies and in their international profile. Through these changes, it is paving the way for new opportunities for partners capable of offering infrastructure advancements and technological innovation. We are lucky enough to have an industry that is completely complementary with that of the Philippines and we could very well be that partner. Starting today, Italy and the Philippines have relaunched a new high-level relationship.”
