Sereni at the OSCE to encourage effective multilateralism

“Italy agrees with the words spoken by Chairperson-in-office, Miroslav Lajcak encouraging effective multilateralism” to give renewed momentum, strength and topicality to the “spirit of Helsinki” at the heart of the OSCE said Deputy Minister Marina Sereni, addressing the OSCE Ministerial Council in Bratislava. The Deputy Minister also emphasised Italy's commitment in the OSCE to overcoming the crisis in Ukraine and finding solutions to other ongoing conflicts. At the same time, she reiterated the need to stay alert to the numerous “non-traditional” challenges to security including climate change, cyber-attacks, terrorism, organised crime and illegal trafficking.
As a member of the OSCE Troika, Sereni chaired the second plenary session of the day.
Sereni had face-to-face meetings during the day with the Foreign Ministers of Montenegro and North Macedonia and the Secretary of State of the Swiss Confederation. The meetings gave an opportunity to repeat Italy’s strong support for the incoming Albanian chairmanship of the OSCE. The Deputy Minister also repeated that, from Italy’s viewpoint, EU enlargement should continue to be a priority so that positive signals could be given for the stabilisation of the Western Balkans.
