Foreign Affairs Note - Global Education Summit; Sereni, Italy will contribute 25 million in the next 5 years to the Global Partnership for Education

“As already announced at the beginning of June, I have the honour and I am proud to confirm that we will increase our multi-year contribution to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). We will contribute Euro 25 million over the next 5 years, half of which will be earmarked for educating children in Africa.” This is what Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marina Sereni, said via video at the Global Education Summit hosted by British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, in London on 28 and 29 July, to refinance the Global Partnership for Education.

“Italy acknowledges the GPE’s crucial role as a multilateral organisation and multi-stakeholder mechanism, and welcomes the extraordinary results achieved in guaranteeing quality education for millions of children around the world, especially those in the most fragile and precarious situations. Investing in education - and especially the education of children - means investing in the future of their Countries. In fact, this is one of the social and economic investments that has the greatest impact governors and donors can achieve”.

On this occasion, Italy and the other EU Member Countries will announce a joint pledge, making “Team Europe” the GPE’s main donor. “Italy is happy to join forces with the European Commission and other EU Countries in affirming that we need a strong global partnership for education and adequate financing to ensure that all children have access to quality education. Together, as Team Europe, we can have a greater impact and promote our shared priorities in the governance structure of the Global Partnership for Education and in our partner countries”.
