Venice has been confirmed as an emblematic site on the UNESCO World Heritage List

Venice will not be classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Danger. At its 44th session, conducted in virtual mode this afternoon from Fuzhou (China), the UNESCO World Heritage Committee did not unanimously accept the proposal, tabled by the technical assessment body ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites),  to include the site "Venice and its Lagoon" on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Minister Di Maio expressed great satisfaction with this significant outcome, which has been attained thanks to the commitment and determination of the Italian Government in its recent adoption of the long-awaited provision that prohibits large vessels from transiting through the San Marco basin and the Giudecca canal, beginning from 01 August this year.

By so doing, the Italian government has reiterated its complete and constant readiness to collaborate with UNESCO and the World Heritage Centre to ensure the increased protection of the emblematic site of Venice, by preserving the “Outstanding Universal Value” of the lagoon.
