Alfano: “We are satisfied with the statement by the UN Security Council on the conditions of migrants in Libya

“We are satisfied with the statement on the conditions of migrants in Libya that was approved today by the United Nations Security Council. It is the tangible result of the briefing on the same matter delivered to the UNSC last 28 November, organised by Italy while holding the rotating presidency,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, specifying that “Italy has succeeded to bring the Libyan dossier back at the top of the international agenda.”

The Minister continued: “The harsh condemnation by the UNSC of the degrading episodes and the reduction to slavery of African migrants, as well as the support expressed by the UN’s executive body to the Libyan Presidential Council’s decision to open an investigation to establish the responsibilities for the violation of human rights in Libya are the first results of a process in which Italy, as President of the UNSC, has invested great resources.”

He added: “At the same time, it is important that the UN Security Council has emphasised the importance of the activities performed by the United Nations Agencies (UNHCR and IOM) on the Libyan territory: the role of these agencies has also always been supported by our Government. Moreover, we welcome the UNSC’s appreciation for the initiatives put in place by regional States and organisations to build Libya’s capacities in the matter of migration.”
