Announcement of Milan candidacy to the seat of the UPC

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio, expressed his satisfaction for the results of today's meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepComm) of the Unified Patent Court (UPC), which met today by videoconference to discuss the effects of UK leaving the EU on the Agreement establishing the Court.

During the meeting, Italy announced its intention to present Milan candidacy as the new UPC seat to replace London.

The Preparatory Committee confirmed the willingness of the participating States to ensure the entry into force of the UPC as soon as the ratification process is completed, and hopefully already in early 2021. In order to allow this, it approved a provisional redistribution of the competence of the London office between the existing offices in Paris and Munich, provided, however, that this is a short-term solution, pending the entry into force of the Agreement and that Italy can start, in agreement with the other signatory States, the procedure for amending the Agreement to include Milan as the third seat of the central Court division.
