European and World Day against the Death Penalty

“European and World Day against the Death Penalty”, Italy reaffirms its opposition to the death penalty

On “European and World Day against the Death Penalty”, Italy reaffirms its firm opposition to the death penalty, which is unjustifiable under any circumstance.

Italy has always spearheaded the promotion of the broadest possible support for the resolution on the universal moratorium on the death penalty, working to broaden the consensus of the international community through an inclusive approach. Over many years now, this effort has involved the whole diplomatic network in a continuous dialogue also with civil society. In this perspective, in 2014 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation set up a Task Force with representatives of civil society organizations. This Task Force was again convened at the Farnesina yesterday with the aim of coordinating and enhancing the effectiveness of Italy’s awareness-raising action in Third Countries to marshal support for the UN universal moratorium, which we will again support this year at the United Nations General Assembly.

Moreover, Italy promotes and actively participates in international meetings on the issue of the death penalty. Recently, at the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations last 25 September, Minister Moavero Milanesi attended a high-level event organised by Italy in cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to analyse the link between death penalty, poverty and the right to legal aid.
