Resumption of political dialogue must lead rapidly to formation of Government of National Unity that can stabilise the country, says Gentiloni. The international community is ready to tackle the challenge.
“The expected resumption in Morocco of the intra-Libyan political dialogue process facilitated by the United Nations must lead, as soon as possible, to the formation of a Government of National unity. A government that can stabilise the country, kick-start the reconstruction and combat the growing infiltration of Da’esh-affiliated terrorist groups”. This was the comment by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, on the situation in Libya.
“The sheer scope of the challenge posed by the crisis in Libya means that the international community’s action must be decisive, coherent and substantial. We cannot let potential developments in the situation find us unprepared. We underscored this in New York, in the recent meeting of the United Nations Security Council, and I intend to reiterate it in the forthcoming informal meeting of the European Union’s foreign ministers in Riga”, continued the minster.
“As I have repeated on more than one occasion, Italy is ready to play its part in supporting Libya’s new institutions and its population. And we are ready, too, to restart our cooperation effort and for the country in sectors such as combating terrorism and extremism, capacity building in the security field, combating illegal trafficking, migration, and the development of civil society”, concluded Minister Gentiloni.
