Minister Moavero Milanesi on a diplomatic mission to Athens (8-9 August)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, is on a diplomatic mission to Athens today. His agenda is dense with meetings, especially with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopīos Pavlopoulos, and with the Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias. The Italian Foreign Minister’s last visit to Greece was almost three years ago and Minister Moavero will significantly be the first Foreign Minister of an EU Member Country to visit the new Greek Government which took office one month after the national elections. The aim of the mission is to set a common agenda based on structural mechanisms establishing regular mutual consultations, especially with a view to effectively coordinate their respective positions in the multilateral forums of which both Countries are members, such as the UN and associated Organisations, NATO and the European Union. Greeks and Italians are bound by age-hold close relations and a multi-millennial civilization. On this special and sound basis rests the present relationship of close and affectionate friendship as well as the natural and ample convergence of their respective political interests and economic priorities. In particular, the two Countries share the same geopolitical position in the Mediterranean Sea and consequently the same challenges and opportunities. In this respect, Minister Moavero will propose possible joint initiatives aimed, on the one hand, at fostering the overall stabilisation of the area with the cessation of many of the ongoing conflicts and, on the other hand, at better regulating the large migration flows through a full and solidarity-based engagement of the European Union Member Countries and Institutions. With respect to this latter proposal and to the prospects of the EU accession process of the Western Balkan Countries, the two ministers will have the opportunity to discuss and agree the position to adopt at the upcoming key meetings of the EU Council.
