CIBUS, Italy’s major international food and agri-food exhibition, has kicked off. Present at the opening of the exhibition on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was Vincenzo de Luca, Director General for Cultural and Economic Promotion and Innovation, who spoke at a conference on promoting and protecting Made-in-Italy products, together with the President of Federalimentare, Luigi Scordamaglia.
Director General de Luca took the opportunity to also visit the premises of Barilla, the world’s largest pasta producing plant, and to meet with the company’s top executives in order to discuss possible joint initiatives in Italy and abroad.
The agri-food sector is one of the major drivers of Italian foreign trade, with a volume that, for the first time, exceeded the 40-billion-Euro threshold in 2017. The Foreign Ministry staunchly supports Italian companies of the agri-food production chain wanting to access global markets.
Director General de Luca recalled: “In promoting Brand Italy abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spearheads promotional activities along with our Country’s Public Administrations and businesses in order to create synergies and define areas for priority actions to be taken in a systemic approach. In this respect, the organization of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, now at its third edition, takes on special relevance as it involves all the sector’s major players in more than 1400 events in 110 Countries.”
The Foreign Ministry, together with its diplomatic and consular network, works incessantly to assure freedom of trade and to remove non-tariff barriers that especially affect the agri-food sector. To this end, it is important to protect the Italian food model, based on the use of the natural ingredients that characterise the “Mediterranean Diet”, against all attempts to impose ‘food traffic light’ systems and to discriminate our points of excellence in food.
