The Conference aims to develop a preliminary assessment of the implications of the pandemic to implement the 2030 Agenda. It is crucial to intensify efforts to build greater resilience to shocks and provide a roadmap for a more just, inclusive and equitable recovery necessary to sustain peace and development and achieve the Decade of Action to reach the Global Goals.
Launching the three-day SDG16 Conference, Vice Minister Sereni urged participants to "rethink governance", an essential step to transform "the challenge of the pandemic into an opportunity to rebuild a fairer, more sustainable world that, and above all, leaves no one behind. Institutions are crucial in determining success or failure to tackle poverty, reduce inequality, and promote prosperity for people and the planet. Without institutions, it is not possible to lay the foundations for peaceful, just and inclusive societies. Since the first negotiations of the 2030 Agenda, Italy has been strongly committed to supporting the need to link peace and development through the principles of justice, good governance, respect for fundamental freedoms, human rights and the rule of law".
