June 28 meeting of the anti-Daesh coalition chaired by Minister Di Maio and SoS Blinken

On June 28th, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, will co-chair the plenary ministerial meeting of the anti-Daesh Coalition together with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

This is a long-awaited appointment that comes more than 2 years since the previous large-format meeting in February 2019.

The Ministerial meeting, which will be held at the new Fiera di Roma, is expected to be attended by over 40 Ministers from the countries joining the Coalition, by NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, and by EU High Representative Borrell, as well as some African countries invited as observers. It will be an opportunity to renew the collective commitment of the members of the Coalition to the lasting defeat of Daesh and to prevent any attempt by it to recover. To that end, the Ministers will reiterate the importance of maintaining a high level of attention to the commitment, including the financial commitment, to the stabilisation of the liberated areas in Iraq and Syria.

The fight against the global dimension of ISIS, in particular its propagation in Africa and the need to counteract its roots in the most fragile areas of the continent, beginning from the Sahel, will also be at the centre of the discussions.

The Ministerial meeting confirms Italy's high-profile commitment to the Coalition's activities, both on the military and civilian sides. On the sidelines of the Coalition meeting there will also be a small-format meeting on Syria chaired by Secretary of State Blinken, which will also be attended by Minister Di Maio.
