Ministry of Foreing Affairs and Accademia di Santa Cecilia, tribute to Morricone

Ministry of Foreing Affairs and Accademia di Santa Cecilia, tribute to Morricone

On 6 July 2020, at the age of 91, Maestro Ennio Morricone sadly passed away. He was an extraordinarily talented composer and arranger, beloved by all for his rare ability to reach and move people with very different musical tastes.

The Farnesina has decided to honour his memory by producing a limited edition box set, available to Embassies, Permanent Representations and Italian Cultural Institutes around the world.

The four songs, recorded on CD and DVD (‘Voci dal silenzio’, ‘Varianti su un segnale di polizia’, ‘Infinite visioni’ and ‘Sicilo e altri frammenti’) come from the repertoire of ‘absolute music’ composed in the last twenty years of the Maestro’s life: experiments in sound sculptures that include real-life sounds – cans, pots, typewriters or industrial machines – but also melodic and rhythmic references from composers who came before him.

The box set includes a 32-page booklet in Italian and English and is accompanied by introductory texts by Minister Luigi Di Maio and the President-Superintendent of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Michele dall’Ongaro. The edition is accompanied by a critical apparatus by the composer and writer Alessandro De Rosa, along with biographical notes by Morricone and the performers.

The performance of the concert – conducted by Maestros Piero Monti and Andrea Morricone, featuring soprano Sara Fiorentini and actor Mariano Rigillo – was entrusted to the musicians of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, where Ennio Morricone directed both the orchestra and the choir for years, forging an unbreakable and lasting bond of affection with them.
