Vice Minister Emanuela Del Re spoke at the end of the 9th semi-annual Meeting of the Special Envoys for the Sahel, chaired by Italy and opened by Minister Luigi Di Maio.
The Vice Minister stressed how, during the meeting, support for the ongoing transition in Mali was reaffirmed, in the belief that the transition has opened a window of opportunity for the resumption of national reconciliation and for the institutional reforms needed to rebuild a national pact between the people and the institutions of Mali. This is a window of opportunity for the international community as well, called to support this transition in concrete terms.
In this regard, the Vice Minister chaired the session of the meeting dedicated to Mali, recalling her recent visit to the country during which she announced the opening of the Italian Embassy in Bamako.
In general, Ms. Del Re continued, the participants of the meeting stressed the need to broaden and deepen the international partnership in support of the stability of the Sahel and, in particular, the importance of economic development to ensure its sustainability. The opportunity to encourage a more sustained role for businesses and private investors in the Sahelian economy was recognised.
"With regard to updating the European strategy for the Sahel, the meeting emphasised the need to devote priority attention to strengthening state governance, the protection of human rights and the strengthening of the rule of law. These are key factors for stabilising the region and are an important part of the pact of responsibility pact with the G5 countries". - the Vice Minister concluded.
