Sport for peace and development: promoting young people's ideas

#ZEROHackathon2018 is coming to an end, with its closing event taking place today at the Farnesina. #ZEROHackathon is a competition of ideas for students created by the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI), in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Rome.

The starting point was paragraph 37 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: “We recognize the growing contribution of Sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.” SIOI invited more than 200 youth coming from different parts of the world to participate in a marathon of ideas on Sport for Development and Peace.

This initiative was inaugurated on 2 May at the Olympic Training Centre “Giulio Onesti”. The ceremony was attended by the president of SIOI, Franco Frattini, the president of CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) and other illustrious guests and sports champions. The main goal of #ZEROHackathon2018 has been to bring together non-formal learning with the values of sports.

After the symbolic relay race organized by FIDAL at the end of the opening ceremony, work took place at Palazzetto Venezia, the headquarters of SIOI. Twenty teams of high school and university students started a 24-hour co-designing marathon. Their focus was on the main challenges that Sport faces: promoting dialogue among peoples, respect of Human Rights, the integrity of Sport and its power to be inclusive.

The most original and feasible ideas will be given an award today by an exceptional jury composed by representatives of the main national and international institutions that supported the event. Among them: Luigi Maria Vignali and Pietro Sferra Carini of MAECI (Farnesina), Alvio La Face of CONI, Simona Montesarchio of MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research), Menaka Nayyar of the US Embassy in Italy, Paola Bocchia for the European Commission Delegation in Italy, Cristina Puccia of SIOI, and Angela Scicchitano of MSOI (Student Movement for International Organization).
