Meeting in Jazz: encounters between Italian and African jazz talents

On Saturday, 15 June at 9 p.m., the African Jazz Village in Addis Ababa, will host a performance by Stefano Carbonelli and Andrea Di Biase with the famous Kain Lab Ethiopian band.

The concert scheduled in Addis Ababa on Saturday, 15 June 2019, kicks off the new “Meeting in Jazz” art project organised by the MIDJ, the Association of Italian Jazz Musicians, in partnership with and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with the aim of creating new opportunities for the talents of Italian and African jazz to meet and exchange experiences.

The project, which falls within the scope of the “Italia, Culture, Africa” 2019 campaign – the cultural programme promoted by the Foreign Ministry – is based on the idea of capitalising on the achievements of the AIR Artists-In-Residence 2018 project, in order to assure continuity to and consolidate the dialogue established between Italian and African artists during their stay, thus creating interesting cross-fertilisations and contaminations.

Stefano Carbonelli, Matteo Di Leonardo and Paride Pignotti, the musicians who spent their Artists-In-Residence periods in 2018 in Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Dakar, will return to the three cities to dialogue, through the language of jazz, with the African musicians that they had the opportunity to meet and to get acquainted with during their experience. The concerts will be followed by workshops open to local musicians.

In Nairobi, the concert will be held on 4 October at the Michael Joseph Centre. Matteo Di Leonardo will play together with Juma Tutu, Mackinlay Mutsembi and Rabai Mokua of the renowned band, the Nairobi Horns Project. Then, to close the year, Paride Pignotti will perform in Dakar with Noumoucounda Cissoko, a well-known and very popular band.

The concerts are organised thanks to the cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institutes in Addis Ababa, Dakar and Nairobi.
