Italian Cooperation Launches Road Map for Family Medicine in Sudan

A new road map was launched yesterday in Khartoum to run the Family Health program in Sudan, which aims to strengthen basic health care for the local population. In this context, the Dictorna program - one of the most important initiatives of the Italian Cooperation in Sudan - is currently being rolled out in the Sudanese states of Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref and Khartoum.

This program, which is worth 5 million euros overall, is now in its second year of operation and aims to help improve the health of the local population by strengthening the functional and operational capacities of the Basic Healthcare System. Up to now, the program, working together with Sudanese institutions, has also promoted cooperation projects with Italian agencies of excellence such as the Italian Institute of Health in Rome.

The reorganization of the first six healthcare facilities, which will all become educational hubs for the training of healthcare workers in the Family Medicine sector, is in the start-up phase. Also, the first concrete steps were made yesterday to set up a general coordination facility, to which Italian Cooperation will provide technical and financial support.

The approach to healthcare that is envisaged by the Family Medicine model implies a vision that goes beyond the individual dimension of the patient, focusing on the entire family and the community context to which it belongs.
