Skopje: concert with music by Leoncavallo

To mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo and the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the teaching of the Italian language in Macedonia, the Italian Embassy organised a concert with opera music at the Skopje Philharmonic. The tenor was Blagoj Nacoski, Macedonian-born but resident in Italy for over 210 years and now the symbol of the close Italian and Macedonian relations.
He was accompanied by the young but well-established pianist Dino Imeri and the very young soprano Helena Anat Susha, a promising talent of the Macedonian school of opera music. Blagoj Nacoski guided the audience through Leoncavallo’s art, performing some of the composer’s most representative arias, interspersed with exclusively instrumental pieces and "counterpoints" of songs and arias from operas by other authors who were contemporaries of the Neapolitan maestro, thus configuring a historical backdrop capable of contextualising Leoncavallo’s music and first successes.
Nacoski himself offered the audience some hints through which to interpret the art and biography of Ruggero Leoncavallo. The evening’s programme closed with the world-famous "Vesti la giubba", drawn from Leoncavallo’s masterpiece "Pagliacci", one of the most successful examples of realist opera.
