Kiev: an exhibition of Italian contemporary art

Pier Francesco Zazo, the Ambassador of Italy to Kiev, has opened the travelling exhibition "The Silk Road. Contemporary art and artists from Italy "at the" Kyiv History Museum ", in the centre of the Ukrainian capital. Curated by Angela Tecce and conceived by the Garuzzo Institute for the Visual Arts of Turin, it includes 38 works by great Italian artists and emerging talents (of whom eight come from the Italian Foreign Ministry’s own Farnesina collection) and offers a condensed panorama of Italian contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. The exhibition has been brought to Kiev thanks to the commitment of the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Italian Embassy. During the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Svetlana Fomenko the Deputy Minister of Culture, Rosalba Garuzzo, President of the Garuzzo Institute, exponents of the Ukrainian cultural world, and others, Ambassador Zazo underlined how the aim of the exhibition is to celebrate the excellent bilateral relations between Italy and Ukraine, and to mark the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence in 2021. As a frontier country, said the Ambassador, for many centuries Ukraine has served as a cultural bridge not only between the various areas of Europe, but also between the European and Asian continents. So Kiev (he continued) is the ideal place for an exhibition that presents a kaleidoscope of artistic trends and that conceives of art as an instrument of intercultural dialogue. In fact the various architectural styles that coexist in the Ukrainian capital are attributable to Byzantine culture, the Ukrainian Baroque, and the Central European and Slavic world including the most recent Soviet past. As it now looks more and more towards Europe, Ukraine is emanating creative energy in numerous fields including architecture, music, design, and art.
