Tanzania: Ambassador Lombardi visits the Southern Highlands

The Ambassador of Italy in Tanzania, Marco Lombardi, together with the Heads of the Missions of Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Poland and the European Union, visited the cities of Mbeya, Njombe and Iringa, the main towns in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, for the purpose of visiting the European and Italian projects under way in the region.

During the visit to Mbeya, the second most populated city after Dar es Salaam, the delegation visited the coffee plantations which, assisted by EU projects, supply Lavazza with coffee beans. During a meeting with representatives of local institutions, also attended by the Deputy Speaker of the Tanzanian Parliament, Tulia Ackson, a presentation was made of the activities carried out by the "Comunità Solidali nel Mondo" organisation in support of disabled children in the region.

In Njombe, the Delegation could learn more about the status of the development cooperation projects sponsored by the EU Delegation in the field of agriculture, to encourage innovation in the production process and improve the living conditions of the local communities. The Italian Embassy and the EU Delegation in Tanzania also organised a meeting in Iringa, at which representatives of Doctors with Africa-CUAMM, Sant'Egidio, CEFA, CALL AFRICA and IBO could present their activities to representatives of the local authorities. According to Ambassador Marco Lombardi, the visit was a great opportunity to promote Italian civil society organisations operating in Tanzania to the local authorities and the EU bodies responsible for funding cooperation projects in this country.
