A contest between two chefs kicks off the 'Week of Italian Cuisine' in Madrid

A contest between two Michelin star-winning chefs, Italy’s Niko Romito and Spain’s Ángel León, in the preparation of pasta, the star ingredient of Italian cuisine, kicked off the Week of Italian Cuisine in Spain at the Italian Embassy in Madrid. The Italian Ambassador Stefano Sannino said: “This event is the best way of leveraging the contribution of Italian and Spanish institutions and enterprises and famous chefs to promote Italian high-quality products. It is also an important opportunity to enhance the cooperation between Italian and Spanish culinary traditions, which are the great European expressions of the Mediterranean diet.” The programme of the ‘Week’, which will run from 19 to 25 November, includes activities to promote Italian training courses in the food sector, local food production chains and to attract young talents interested in learning more about Italian food and wine. Through the collaboration between ICE-Agenzia, the ENIT Office in Madrid and the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Spain and the partnership between Italian and Spanish enterprises, the event also presented the new editions of the “Prepare Your Future” competitions which will enable young Spanish chefs and sommeliers to access high-level vocational training courses at the ALMA – The International School of Italian Cuisine.

In particular, on 22 November, the Italian Embassy in Madrid will host Pino Cuttaia, Brand Ambassador of ALMA and chef at the two Michelin star-winning restaurant La Madia in Licata who, together with the winner of the first contest for young chefs, Pilar Toledo Verdu', will bring to Spain the flavours of his native Sicily. Moreover, the Coordinator of the ALMA Wine Academy, Ciro Fontanesi, will select and award prizes to the winners of the second edition of the contest "Prepare Your Future - Young sommeliers of Italian Wines" which, this year as in past editions, will enable three Spanish youths to attend masterclasses in Italy and to visit Italy’s most emblematic wine-making regions. Lastly, the Cinema Festival of Madrid will present the screening of auteur films and shorts dedicated to Italy’s culinary tradition and a conference to illustrate the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
