Press accreditation notice - International Seminar

On 23 May 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Farnesina will host the International Seminar “Migration and the Demographic Dividend: mobility from Sub-Saharan Africa”, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in partnership with the Italian Association for Women and Development (Associazione Italiana Donne per lo Sviluppo - AIDOS) and with the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

The opening session will start with remarks by Giorgio Marrapodi, Director General for Development Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, followed by Arthur Erken, Director of Communications and Strategic Partnership at the UNFPA and Jayathma Wickramanayake, Special Envoy on Youth of the United Nations Secretary General.

The session will be moderated by Luigi De Chiara, head of the Strategy, Global Processes and International Unit of the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the MAECI.

The meeting will follow with thematic sessions featuring national and international experts who will illustrate and analyse data and policies relative to migration and the demographic dividend in Sub-Saharan Africa.

With a population of 1.2 billion, the African population will rise to 1.7 billion in 2030 and to 3 billion in 2063. This population rise will also boost the migration rate. The Seminar intends to highlight the need for a multi-sectoral and multi-actor integrated approach in order to act on the deep causes of migration and the associated challenges. The aim is to convert the demographic dividend challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa into a great development opportunity for the region. The gender issue will be considered as a transversal theme. The concept of gender dividend, which has recently come into the broader debate on demographic dividends, is configured as the economic growth that could be achieved through adequate investments on women and girls.

The Seminar is also part of the Sustainable Development Festival, which is organised every year by the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile - ASviS) to promote and disseminate the culture of sustainability in the Italian Society.

Journalists, photographers and TV crews interested in following the event are requested to apply for accreditation by sending an email to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s Institutional Press and Communication Service at the following address: accreditamentostampa@esteri.it (Tel. + 39 06/3691.3432 or 8573 or 8210), attaching thereto the letter of his/her media organisation (or press card for freelance reporters) and, for members of the foreign press, a Note Verbale released by the Rome Embassy of the media organisation’s Country.
