In full compliance with the laws on privacy, the Crisis Unit has created a centralised data bank on the presence of Italians in the world. Italian nationals abroad fall into three broad categories:
- residents abroad: registered with AIRE (registry of Italians residing abroad);
- the so-called stable presences, i.e. Italians who, although they reside abroad for the greater part of the year, have nevertheless decided to maintain their legal residence in Italy;
- temporary travellers.
In order to gather information on Italians travelling temporarily abroad the Crisis Unit has made agreements with tour operator associations. In case of need, using a special software compatible with the programmes used by the Crisis Unit, it is possible to rapidly retrieve data on anyone who has bought a tour package for a particular country. In order to make this instrument even more effective the Crisis Unit has created the website www.dovesiamonelmondo.it, which gives Italian travellers a chance to voluntarily register their personal data before leaving and helps the Crisis Unit to plan more rapid and incisive rescue operations in cases of serious emergency. These data can be entered into the data bank up to 30 days before departure and, in compliance with the laws currently in force on the protection of personal data, the information entered is automatically cancelled two days following the return date indicated
