Mogherini at Kiev, “here to support dialogue” – “Bilateral ceasefire” focus of talks with Ukraine premier

As Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini explained at the end of her meeting with Premier Arseniy Yatsenyuk, she was in Kiev to “support the path of dialogue” which, “although difficult and complicated” was “still open”. She explained that she had asked the premier to work together on a “bilateral ceasefire”. Mogherini also announced that the Ukraine authorities had launched a formal inquest into the death of Andy Rocchelli, the Italian photo-reporter killed in Ukraine.


Other talks


In the Ukraine capital for a 2-day visit, Mogherini met with OSCE special envoy Heidi Tagliavini, as well as seeing Patria party leader Yulia Timoshenko. One of the central topics of discussion was the signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU. According to Minister Mogherini, Italy and the European Union, along with the entire international community, must endeavour to make the “Ukraine’s transition to the EU a success story”.


Also on Minister Mogherini’s agenda in Ukraine, before leaving for Moscow, is a meeting on Tuesday with foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin and President Petro Poroshenko.
