Italy is “perhaps in this moment the European continent’s true hope”, stated Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini when asked to comment on the outcome of the European elections, one month ahead of the launch of the Italian duty presidency of the Council of the EU. “Italy is in a position to no longer have to ask Europe, but to be a leader in building new European policies. In economic terms, by creating a balance between rigour and investments, with an eye toward the creation new jobs; and in foreign policy, which must be more incisive”, she underscored, “not only for the good of Italians, but for all Europeans”, she assured. “The Italian presidency will also serve to usher in the first half-year of the new legislature”, she pointed out. “The Italian government is called to shoulder the responsibility for rewriting the European agenda”.
