Centrality of the Arctic at the Arctic Connections 2025 Conference

The international Conference Arctic Connections 2025 – Space in the Arctic, organised by the Società Italiana per l’Organizzazione Internazionale (SIOI), the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Rome and the High North Center for Business and Governance/North University in Bodø, was held today. The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Giorgio Silli took part in the Conference.

At the opening of the proceedings, a message of greeting was read out in which Minister Tajani emphasised the crucial importance of the Arctic Sea as a new strategic geopolitical and economic crossroads. It is an increasingly central region for NATO security, for the availability of natural resources, including energy, and for the opening of new maritime routes in light of the impact of climate change and its global consequences.

In his message, while recalling that in 2026 Rome will host the Arctic Circle Forum, a unique opportunity to be seized to foster Italian research in the region, Minister Tajani pointed out: “

“We want Italy to be increasingly present in the Arctic also to seize the opportunities that are opening up for our companies in sectors with high potential, such as infrastructure, energy, defence, the blue economy and logistics, as well as space and connectivity.”

Organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Italian Navy, AB AQUA, Il Sole 24 Ore and Radio 24, the annual Arctic Connections Conference provides an important opportunity for Italian, Norwegian and international players to discuss and exchange views on the Arctic as a key region for space activities and how to achieve better space governance through international cooperation.
