This afternoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani held a telephone conversation with the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts aimed at fostering a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Israel and Iran. Together with Secretary Rubio, Tajani agreed on the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The Minister was informed by Secretary Rubio that the United States is ready to engage in direct negotiations with Iranian counterparts, as recently announced by President Trump.
The two also discussed the situation in Gaza. Minister Tajani stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and for the full restoration of humanitarian aid access. Secretary Rubio concurred, confirming that this is the intention of the Trump administration. Finally, Tajani and Rubio addressed the need to relaunch negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible.
