The third Italian Export Control Forum was held today at the Farnesina and, this year, was dedicated to the dual-use materials sector—namely devices and technologies developed for civilian purposes but with potential military applications. The event, organised by the National Authority UAMA of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with ASSONIME (the Association of Italian Joint-Stock Companies), brought together more than 200 representatives from the private sector for an intensive day of discussions, along with representatives from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, the Ministry of Defence, the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency, and the Directorate-General for Trade of the European Commission.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Edmondo Cirielli, opened the proceedings of the first session, which were later concluded by remarks from the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, highlighting the importance of the sector for both national security and the economic growth of Italy. It is therefore essential to maintain increasingly high standards of efficiency in authorisation procedures in order to minimise the burden on companies while at the same time ensuring the rigorous application of controls. Undersecretary Tripodi also recalled the Government’s ongoing commitment to a system-wide approach capable of concretely involving industry as well as universities and research centres, with a view to prioritising economic growth while respecting Italy’s international obligations.
The Government’s objective remains to provide effective support to the private sector in order to prevent the risk of diversion of exported products toward uses contrary to international peace and stability, the protection of human rights, and Italy’s economic security interests.
