Following the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani created a “Gulf Task Force” to strengthen the work of the Crisis Unit, to support the efforts of Embassies and Consulates in the region, and to address the thousands of requests for assistance from thousands of citizens stranded in the Gulf countries. The Minister is also in constant contact with Ambassadors to Iran and the region to assess the progress of Israeli and US military operations.
The Italian government welcomed the cooperation that the Gulf governments and their airlines are offering to stranded citizens, primarily by offering hotel accommodations. The Embassies in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar managed to move all waiting passengers from the airports to hotels. There are currently no plans to reopen the airports.
