Italy’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Giorgio Marrapodi, met today with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to illustrate, at Minister Tajani’s request, Italy’s commitment to the stabilization and reconstruction of Gaza in coordination with UN agencies.
Ambassador Marrapodi reaffirmed Italy’s full support for the 20-Point Plan for the cessation of the conflict in Gaza – adopted by Security Council Resolution No. 2803 – and renewed Italy’s commitment to proactively participate in every roundtable dedicated to the Middle East peace process, in order to promote the shared objectives of disarming Hamas, fully resuming humanitarian aid, and initiating reconstruction. In this regard, Italy’s participation as an observer in the first meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, attended by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, is in line with Resolution 2803, which entrusts the Board of Peace with the task of monitoring the stabilization process in the Gaza Strip. In this respect, Italy sees the Board of Peace as a tool that can leverage the efforts of the UN and other multilateral bodies for peace and security in the Middle East.
The meeting also reaffirmed the availability of the UN agencies in Rome and the Brindisi Logistics Base to carry out new humanitarian operations in Gaza, as announced by Minister Tajani in Parliament. Since October 7, 2023, the Italian Cooperation has mobilized over €130 million for a variety of initiatives relating to the Gaza crisis, and Minister Tajani has recently announced the allocation of €60 million to support recovery and stabilization.
