Tajani holds phone call with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Al-Sabah: “Italy and Europe stand with the Gulf States”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, to reiterate Italy’s solidarity following the unjustified Iranian attacks which in recent days also struck the Al Salem Air Base, where Italian military personnel are stationed.

Minister Al-Sabah thanked Italy for its support and solidarity during this difficult phase and for the backing shown by Italy, with which Kuwait maintains constant dialogue, including at the level of Heads of Government and Ministers of Defence.

The two Ministers also discussed the situation in Iraq, whose territory is being used by pro-Iranian militias to launch attacks against Kuwait and other Gulf States. Italy has invested significant resources in the stabilisation of Iraq and, as reaffirmed during the recent phone call between Tajani and the Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Italy continues to support the role of Baghdad as a factor of stability and dialogue in the region.

Tajani and Al-Sabah also discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its repercussions on global energy flows. Tajani confirmed Italy’s firm commitment to promoting de-escalation and supporting the Gulf States that have been targeted by the attacks. The issue of support for the Gulf countries will also be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the EU Council in Brussels, which will also be attended by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres. “Italy and Europe will support in every possible way the security of Kuwait and the Gulf States,” Tajani said. The Italian Embassy in Kuwait remains fully operational.
