Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani is in Cernay-la-Ville (France) today for the third meeting of G7 Foreign Ministers under the French Presidency.
Today’s agenda will focus on global governance reform and reconstruction. Tomorrow’s sessions will instead address cross-cutting threats, support for Ukraine, and the crisis in Iran and the Middle East.
Today’s discussions will focus on:
- “Global Governance Reform” (in an expanded format including Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India and the Republic of Korea). The discussion will cover three main areas: reform of the United Nations, reform of the peacekeeping system, and improving the efficiency of the humanitarian supply chain, with the aim of providing political impetus to these processes and encouraging the UN to deliver effective reform.
- A working dinner on “Reconstruction” (also in an expanded format with the same countries, joined by Ukraine and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development). Topics under discussion will include the reconstruction of the protective arch of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and efforts to counter the trafficking of Captagon. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha expressed concern about nuclear safety in Ukraine, particularly regarding the condition of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) structure at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was damaged by a Russian drone attack in February 2025. Without intervention, corrosion of the arch could lead to structural failure of the NSC by around 2030. The G7 could help mobilise international support for the repair of the protective structure and act as a catalyst for raising the necessary funds. The estimated cost exceeds EUR 500 million. The Ukrainian Minister of Energy stated that more than EUR 31 million has already been allocated to ensure the safety of the plant, including for the protective arch.
