The Foreign Ministry, in collaboration with the Department for Digital Transformation of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (DTD) and the State Printing and Mint Institute (IPZS), has launched a major pilot project to digitize selected collections of particular value held at the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Historical Archives. This project provides a concrete example of the most innovative historical documentation management policies.
Over the course of the project, entrusted to Postel, over 560 linear metres of documentation relating to national communities abroad, the 1923-1943 Cabinet, the Ministry of Italian Africa, and the 1918-1922 Peace Conference will be digitized. These documents are present in the approximately 33 linear kilometres of documentation held at the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Historical Archives.
Thanks to the project, part of the documentary heritage of the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Historical Archives will be available online through a dedicated portal, thus expanding access to historical documentation for scholars, researchers, and citizens in Italy and abroad. This initiative is one of the first examples of the application of the most advanced digitization technologies to the archival collections of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
