With the inscription of the System of Condominio Theatres in Central Italy on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as decided today by the World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, South Korea, Italy has consolidated its position as the world leader with 62 sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.
“This decision confirms the universal value of our extraordinary cultural heritage. Italy is a true cultural superpower: culture is one of the most precious assets of our identity, one of the most effective tools of our diplomacy and a fundamental pillar of the country’s international presence.”
This award recognises a unique architectural, cultural and civic model that developed between the 18th and 19th centuries in the villages of Central Italy, where the shared ownership and management of theatres have, for over two centuries, fostered the dissemination of culture and live performance, thereby contributing to the cohesion of local communities.
The application was put forward by the Marche Region, with technical and scientific coordination from the Ministry of Culture and the participation of the Umbria and Emilia-Romagna Regions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as part of the priority given to cultural diplomacy championed by Minister Tajani, has supported the nomination process by managing relations with UNESCO and overseeing the process in all the relevant forums.
