The Italian Cultural Institute in Prague hosted a new event in “Along the Paths of Francis”, a programme devised by the Institute to mark the eighth centenary of the Saint’s death.
The lecture, entitled “Eternal Francis: The History of an Image from the Middle Ages to the Present”, was introduced by the Institute’s Director, Marialuisa Pappalardo, and Cultural Attaché Vito De Bellis. Art historian Aurora Roscini Vitali, an official at the National Gallery of Umbria, delivered a presentation offering an in-depth exploration of eight centuries of Italian art.
From the earliest depictions in the thirteenth century to the most recent artistic interpretations, the figure of Francis has become a veritable laboratory of imagery through the works of the Master of Saint Francis, Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Caravaggio, Giorgio de Chirico and Mimmo Palladino.
