The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Marta Dassù, attended the G20 Ministerial in Los Cabos, Mexico, on 19 and 20 February 2012. She was delegated to attend by Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi.
The meeting in Los Cabos, convened by the Mexican Presidency, was the first meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers. Under-Secretary Dassù underscored the role diplomacy can play in supporting greater overall cohesiveness in the G20, whose sphere of operation has progressively expanded beyond the traditional economic-financial agenda. Indeed, it now includes global issues such as climate change, food security and sustainable development.
In the margins, Under-Secretary Dassù had numerous meetings with the other Ministers present, including the German Foreign Minister, Westerwelle. With a view to further strengthening Italy’s relations with Latin America, she also had discussions with the foreign ministers of Mexico, Patricia Espinosa; Argentina, Hector Timerman; Chile, Alfredo Moreno; and Colombia, Angela Holguin. These are all countries to which Italy will be organising economic-diplomacy missions in coming months.
