Today, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Sereni had a phone call with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mohcine Jazouli.
The Deputy Minister, thankful for the authorities that have supported the efforts of our Ministry to repatriate more than 4,000 compatriots stranded in Morocco following Covid 19 pandemic, has reaffirmed the commitment of our country to cooperate at international level to deal with the health emergency and the impact of the virus on our economy.
During the call, the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries were recalled, referring in particular to the Joint Declaration for a Multidimensional and Strategic Partnership, signed by the two Ministers in November 2019. The two Deputy Ministers have agreed on the importance of implementing, through Intergovernmental Summits to be held as soon as epidemiological conditions permit, the initiatives provided for in the Declaration on security, the fight against terrorism and against trafficking in human beings, economic and cultural cooperation.
There is a broad reflection on the issue of Libya, which is considered an absolute priority issue for the stability and security of the entire Mediterranean region. Both Ms Sereni and Mr Jazouli have expressed strong concern about the continuation and intensification of the fighting, also due to the support of actors outside the parties to the conflict.
Both Deputy Ministers have stressed that, in the light of the most recent events, there is no possibility of a military solution to the crisis in Libya. Sereni reiterated Italy’s commitment and determination to reach a truce and a lasting ceasefire, and to resume the intra-Libyan dialogue on the issues indicated by the Berlin Process, starting with that of security, as soon as possible.
Sharing with her Moroccan colleague the need to restart a political process within the framework of the Skhirat agreements and the United Nations resolutions which incorporated the conclusions of the Berlin Conference, Deputy Minister Sereni has then recalled Italy’s commitment to the new EU NAVFOR MED Irini mission, stressing that it would be balanced and impartial towards all parties to the conflict and aimed at the arms embargo decided by the UN.
