The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been following the development of the transit situation, in particular of goods, at the border with Slovenia since yesterday. There have been intense contacts with Slovenian authorities during the night and again this morning.
The Ljubljana authorities have made it clear that the long queues involving Italian vehicles on the Slovenian border are due to the restrictions on the transit of vehicles from Italy introduced by countries bordering Slovenia and Croatia.
While contacts at all levels with the Governments of these countries are continuing, further direct contacts with the Foreign Ministers and other relevant Ministers of the countries concerned are already planned today. The aim of such contact is ensuring that comprehensible border control measures are proportionate and do not go beyond what is necessary. In particular, the transit of vehicles and the transport of goods should not be prevented in the interests of all. It is also essential that these measures should be agreed as far as possible between neighbouring states and in any case, be given prior information to the European authorities.
