Conference: “From a divided memory to a shared history between Italy and Germany”

“This April last, on the eve of the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting, we met at Sant’Anna di Stazzema to pay tribute to the victims of the massacre that took place in August 1944. The National Peace Park, which today rises over that place, keeps alive the memory of the crimes perpetrated by Nazism and Fascism against mankind. It was the best way for us to start our work at the G7 Meeting in Lucca with a view to reaffirming out loud, with great determination and all together, “never again”. Never again there will be war in Europe, also thanks to the European integration project that so far has proven to be the most extraordinary experiment of peace and prosperity in the world. European integration has helped Italy and Germany to reconcile, to be friends again in a Europe united by respecting rights, freedoms, minorities and diversity. It is a Europe we want to protect and relaunch by promoting important actions such as the Rome Declaration of 25 March last.”

This was said by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, ahead of the conference entitled “From a divided memory to a shared history between Italy and Germany. State of research and the results of the ANRP projects” (Italian National Association of former POWs). The event, which will take place on Tuesday, 27 June 2017 at the Farnesina from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., will have addresses by Minister Alfano, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Susanne Wasum-Rainer, and the Deputy President of the ANRP, Michele Montagano.
