Minister Alfano meets with Britain’s “Brexit” Minister

Alfano meets with British minister for “Brexit”, David Davis

“We appreciate Britain’s intention to want to define a new strategic partnership with the European Union in the post-Brexit EU-UK relationships. Italy has committed to give its firm support to this option. In this context, we believe it is essential to negotiate as quickly as possible the ways of guaranteeing the rights of European citizens living in the United Kingdom and of British citizens living in EU Countries with their families. We must negotiate a non-discriminatory system of guarantees directly enforceable on the United Kingdom’s effective date of exit from the European Union. I have very clearly said that Italy would not accept any agreement diminishing the material or individual scope of protection of the vested interests of Italian citizens living in the United Kingdom: it would hamper the possibility of building a new partnership based on trust and on common interests,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, at the end of his meeting with British “Brexit” Minister, David Davis.

The agenda of the meeting, in addition to analysing the beginning of negotiations for Brexit expedited in Brussels on 19 June, also addressed the relocalisation of European Agencies headquartered in the United Kingdom and the cooperation between the EU and the UK in the field of security.
