Europe’s research university in the social sciences and humanities
The European University Institute (EUI) is a unique academic center of excellence in the international landscape. Founded in 1972 by the Member States of the European Community, its main mission is to promote advanced research in the social sciences.
The EUI hosts four departments:
- Economics
- History and Civilization
- Law
- Political and Social Sciences
It offers doctoral and post-doctoral programs to over 600 researchers from more than 60 countries, consolidating its role among the most prestigious research centers in Europe and worldwide.
The Institute is supported by 23 EU Member States and associated countries such as Switzerland and Norway. Its academic community includes over 1,000 members, spread across several historic buildings located in the hills between Fiesole and Florence, many of which are provided by the Italian Government.
The EUI hosts:
- The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, dedicated to interdisciplinary research on European and global policy issues;
- The Max Weber Programme, a pathway for preparation for international academic careers;
- The School of Transnational Governance (STG), founded in 2017, which offers training on global governance topics, a Master in Transnational Governance, executive courses, and programs for Policy Leader Fellows and Young African Leaders.
The EUI Library holds over 500,000 volumes and a vast collection of electronic resources, attracting scholars from across Europe. The campus also houses the Historical Archives of the European Union, which collect official documents from EU institutions (excluding the Court of Justice), offering a unique resource for the study of European integration.
The EUI regularly welcomes heads of state, political leaders, and world-renowned academics who participate in conferences, workshops, and summer schools, contributing to a dynamic and open intellectual environment.
MAECI-EUI SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ITALIAN CITIZENS
Doctoral Programs (PhD)
Italy, as a Member State of the EUI, annually offers, through the MAECI, a quota of scholarships for Italian researchers wishing to pursue a doctorate in one of the Institute’s four departments. Information about this opportunity is available on the EUI website on the dedicated page .
“Master of Research in Economics” Program
Each year, the MAECI also provides a quota of 12-month scholarships for Italian researchers applying to the Master of Research in Economics.

Academic Year 2025–2026
For the current academic year, the following scholarships will be offered to Italian students:
- 27 scholarships for Italian researchers enrolled in the first, second, or third year of the PhD’s program;
- 2 scholarships for attendance of the Master of Research in Economics.
