UN Human Rights Council: Establishment of an international monitoring mechanism on the human rights situation in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expresses his satisfaction with the adoption of a resolution on the human rights situation in Afghanistan by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The resolution establishes the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur to monitor the human rights situation in the country. The initiative received broad support from Council members (28 votes in favour, 5 against and 14 abstentions).

Together with the European Union, which presented this resolution on behalf of the 27 Member States, Italy worked with commitment for this result. At the opening of the current UNHRC session, Italy had already launched the initiative of a joint declaration, supported by 51 countries, to call for the urgent establishment of an independent mechanism to monitor human rights violations and abuses in Afghanistan.

We will continue to work with commitment in all relevant fora to maintain the international community’s attention on the human rights situation in Afghanistan.
