Thanks to a collaboration between the Italian Embassy in Malta, the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta and the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, Agnese Purgatorio, an Apulian artist whose work focuses on dialogue, borders and illegality, will be participating in the international Art Camp, organised in Gozo from 7 to 20 May 2017 by the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with the Cultural Programme of the Maltese Presidency of the European Union.
Agnese Purgatorio will be working in constant dialogue with the other artists and with anyone wishing to visit the studios of artists involved in the event, thus breaking the traditional barrier between art and the public.
According to UNESCO’s Director General Irina Bokova, the Art Camp is “a very concrete and accessible way to nurture and educate younger generations in intercultural skills and dialogue. Art has the power to speak to people’s hearts, without distinguishing between origin, language, sex and beliefs”.
The artists involved in the project, all from the Mediterranean area, will create new contemporary works of art focused on the values of sustainability, peace and protecting and promoting the diversity of cultural expression.
The Italian presence is a significant demonstration of the country’s involvement in the general programme of activities undertaken for the UNESCO International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022), of which Art Camp is a part.
